Pink eye

A month and a half ago, one of my does had an infection in one eye. I treated it by squirting some LA200 in the affected eye twice a day for five days. It didn't seem to improve it. As I'd read on here, it cleared up in two weeks. So now, a month after the infection appeared to mend, it has returned. Still just the one doe and in the same eye. I've again started to treat it, same as before, and it's been three days and it's getting worse. I caught it earlier this time, so while it has gotten worse, it's still not as bad as it was the first time around, ...... yet. Any suggested different treatments? Am I potentially looking at a chronic issue with this girl? Thanks!

  • Yikes. I have a hard enough time getting liquid on her eye, I can't imagine powder.

Think I'll wait and see through the weekend, and if it progresses I'll call the vet Monday.
It doesn't look any worse today and is covering 25% of the eye. Unlike the first time, when by now the whole eye was cloudy and swollen.
  • I have never heard of a goat getting a relapse of pink eye. If it is only one eye, it is usually caused by an injury -- like a piece of hay stuck in her eye or something. It's pretty much always caused by some kind of germs getting into the eye, but if it's flies, it's usually both eyes, and you'll have multiple goats getting it.

I wouldn't expect LA200 to work at all at this point. They did a study in humans where they found that if they used an antibiotic for X, it wouldn't work for anything in that person for quite awhile. I'm thinking it was about six months, but it's been a few years since I read the study. You can get eye drops from the vet specifically for eye infections. They sell antibiotic powder at the farm stores, but that looked about as horrible as it sounds the one time I tried it. I felt really bad using it. The goat HATED it.
