Pasteurizer question

Hey guys...

I cannot get through to Hoeggers.  Does anyone know if their pasteurizer will work at less than capacity.  It is a 2 gal.

Can you put two quarts in there and run it?  It would take me forever to save up 2 gal just from my one doe.

Thanks

  • What an excellent idea!

  • I don't know the answer to your question, but unless you're going to be pasteurizing a lot of milk, you don't need a pasteurizer. To pasteurize milk, you only need to heat it to 145 degrees on the stove for 30 minutes. The only down side to this is that if you are easily distracted, you could wind up accidentally boiling over the milk, which is not fun. I set a timer on the stove to remind me to check it frequently -- especially if I'm going to get on the computer! :) If the milk is fresh from the goat, I set it for five minutes the first time because it doesn't take that long to get up to 145. If it's from the frig, I set it for 10 minutes the first time. Then based on how close it is, I reset it for 2-3 minutes, or I may not even leave the kitchen if it's really close.
