Once-a-Day Milker Grain Ration

Hi all,

My daughter's doe is due to kid in a couple of weeks, and we'll start giving her some Chaffhaye along with her seeds and things in the morning.

I've been reading old threads, and see a lot of good suggestions regarding the amount of grains, etc. you feed milking does. Typically what I read is that you give them these treats twice/day.

Question is, we really want to only milk in the morning. So, if we gradually work up to double the twice per day amount (2 cups at a time, for example), would you think that's too much at one sitting? Right now our goats are accustomed to a morning treat (mainly veggie scraps and BOSS), and just unlimited forage and hay for the rest of the day. We give them fresh water at night, but no other food. I'd like to keep evening treats out of the picture. (We used to give evening treats, but they'd anticipate it and yell at us nonstop starting at around 4 or 5pm--super annoying.)

Does anyone else milk only in the morning? What's your routine?

  • I'll probably start now with a quarter cup or so, and increase it to a cup total, as long as she keeps her good condition. They're doing really well on shrubs, a little hay, a little BOSS and some kitchen compost.

But as always, I'll keep reading! Let me know what you decide to do.

    Hi Naomi,

I have no information for you but was just logging on to ask the exact same question. I also am only milking in the morning, for now anyway, and don't want to give them the goodies in the evening for exactly the same reason.
