Oh so skinny!

My milker is so skinny. She is feeding three little "lard" babies (definitely not suffering) and giving me a quart each morning. I separate at night. I am feeding her goat pellets and BOSS as well as alfafa pellets, browse and hay.  I don't want to overfeed grain but I'd like to see some weight on her. I'm thinking raising three healthy kids has caused this. They'll be two months old on the 16th.  She has an extra feeding when I separate at night as well.

  • The same thing happened to my younger goat. She kidded Feb. 3 and only in the last 2-3 weeks has started to look normal again. Just keep an eye on her like Deborah said.

  • Goats usually bottom out on their weight at six weeks postpartum, so you should start to see her gain at this point. It used to really drive me nuts, but then I remembered how skinny I got when I was breastfeeding and people were giving me a hard time, but I felt great and was eating like a horse. So, I TRY to relax more now. I do check their eyelids to make sure they're not anemic from a worm overload, but otherwise, there's not a lot you can do beyond good nutrition.
