My doe Leela who has 4 week old triplets didn't want grain today. She did eat about 1/2 of what I gave her early this morning but then she doesn't want any more. She is eating hay and alfalfa and I've seen her eating lots of baking soda. Could her rumen be upset? Her poo looks normal and she doesn't seem at all out of sorts in any other way. Just makes me nervous since she usually inhales the grain. She ate some fruit I offered her too. Any thoughts on this?

  • Oh God that's awful! Leela is just the type to do something like that! Once when she was younger, she tore a piece of a plastic bag off of a feed bag and as I ran to her yelling NO NO NO! she chewed really fast and swallowed it! Nothing ever came of it but sometimes you just wanna say to them, "I spend all this time, effort and money to keep you healthy and happy and you go and do this? What's up with that?!?" They're just like 2 year olds running around unsupervised LOL.

  • You just never know! A few years ago on this group someone's goat went off feed and died, so they cut her open and found a plastic bag in her rumen! It must have just blown into her pasture, and she ate it. :(

  • Thanks Deborah, she seems to be better this afternoon and ate some grain when I offered it. I got her some pine branches too and she devoured them happily. Earlier when she was laying down I could see some crazy movement in her rumen! Wonder what made it upset? I didn't give her anything different at all lately.

  • Not eating grain but eating lots of baking soda sounds like an upset rumen. As long as she is eating hay, browse, pasture, etc, that's fine.
