Nigerian or Pygora?

So I was going to breed my doe next year, and I was just wondering what breed of buck to use. There is a local Pygora (pygmy angora) buck that I could use, and that way the kids would have fiber that I could spin, weave, etc. However, I would also like to find another Dwarf to breed her with. What would be the better option?

  • Ok, thanks.

  • I'd go with the ND. Pygoras have three different types of fiber, and even if this buck had the ideal, chances are 50/50 for the doe throwing a kid with anything more than cashmere, which all goats have in winter, and you can't do much with it. A purebred ND would also be worth more. A half pygora would just be a pet. It probably would not be even half decent for milking. I used to think that I could/would milk anything with teats, but there is a LOT to be said for animals that are bred for dairy. I may be the only person in the world to ever milk my Shetland sheep, but after milking two ewes for two days to get a quart of milk to make yogurt, I called it quits. If you want fiber, get a hardy breed of primitive (unimproved) sheep. I really used to want angoras but after doing some research, I realized they're not the hardiest animals, and I didn't think I'd be very happy with them.
