Newbie! ND vs Alpine/Nubian cross?

So I have two Nigerian dwarves that I just adore. I am a total newbie to milking and I am really enjoying it... even more than I thought I would, yay! Anyways.. I am learning that the limited amount of milk one Nigerian doe is not enough for your family. I bred both my does, but the one didn't take, so I only have one in milk. I recently came across a doe for sale... alpine, Nubian cross. Says they are giving about a gallon a day? Yes? How is the taste? Anyone have this cross and love it??? Or maybe hate it?

  • You should ask to try the milk from this goat for yourself. It tastes quite a bit different, and my children didn't like it. However, some people do.

  • Hello! I guess it all depends on what you want. A full size dairy goat will definetly give you more milk, although a gallon a day is certainly on the high end. The milk of full size goats is lower in butterfat than that of NDs, so it will taste a little less rich. Some people like that and some do not.  A full size goat will need more feed and be harder to handle physically. With a Alpine/Nubian cross it's hard to say specifics because you don't know which breed they will tend to take after more. Both are said to have good dairy temperments, although in my experience I have found Nubians to be a bit hard to manage. Alpines can have a tendency to be independent.

It's pretty much a matter of what you prefer and what your family's needs are. If you don't mind the higher feed bill and you don't have a problem with managing a larger animal, why not give it a try?
