New to Kidding

Dear NDG,

My carmellita is due to kid in about five weeks--her and my first time.  The vet was out yesterday to give her the SeBo shot and now its count down time and several questions arise for me:

Her sibling will kid the following month; do they need to be separated?  how long?

In Alaska it is still cold in April, will the mother and kid need a heated bed or how warm must the new babe be kept? and how long?  PS They are in an insulated barn and their old bed will be out of the kidding area.

The vet predicts single kid as a first birth.  Experiences from others?

I'm SO excited to have the opportunity to "talk" with others who are working with Nigerians!  Hurray and thanks!

  • Welcome to the group! And congratulations on the upcoming births!

If you only have two goats, it's better to leave them together. They need a friend, so it would be probably be upsetting for them if they were alone.

Although standard goats often have a single kid the first time, that is not as predictable for NDs. We've had FFs have twins, triplets, and even quads, so there are no guarantees. If you know how many babies her dam had, that will give you a clue about what she might have.

What type of temperatures are you talking about for kidding?
