We are in the process of getting our goat shelter and pen set up. When that is complete then we will bring home a 2 year old registered ND female who already pregnant due in Feb and a younger doe 9 mo that is 3/4 ND. We are breeding her with a fully registered buck. The buck is for sale and quite friendly. He has been de scented.  I had not heard of that before but he didn't smell a bit though he did pee on himself.  He must have thought that would impress us....... but not so much LOL
He is for sale I was wondering if we should get him too.
Anyway I am excited. I have always wanted goats and since we now live on a farm and are working toward self sufficiency the milk will be most welcome.  I am looking forward to learning all I can since we are novice goat people.  I am thankful to have found this forum that I can ask questions as we go along.

  • Welcome! I have heard that you can burn the scent glands behind the horn buds, but in eight years of having goats, I've never met anyone who has done it. Another breeder once told me that sometimes does won't let young bucks near them, because they don't really smell like a buck yet, so she's had to put them with older boys to make them stink. Don't know how accurate that is, but it's got me paying attention to how my does react to young bucks now.

As for buying that buck, I probably wouldn't do it, because if your doe has a doe, it would be nice to have an unrelated buck to breed her to. But if you really love something about him, and you don't mind buying another buck next year, go for it. You'll find lots of info in the archives about getting started with goats and cheese. We produce 99% of our dairy products from our ND milk. You are in for a treat!
