My baby buck...has issues!

I'm not even sure this is the correct place to put this...and it's not really a question, just an observation. My "baby" buck is 8 months old...starting to grow a beard...very interested in all the girls but he hasn't been tall enough to get the job done when given the chance. So yesterday I had the boys (the baby and the senior buck) out with me while I worked in the yard. Little Man walked over to my husband's foam archery target (not deer-shaped, it is sort of a hexagonal thing with bright yellow markings)and started talking "bucky" to it and rubbing on the yellow rope handle. Then he mounted it, for Pete's sake. I'm not sure if he was trying to dominate it or mate with it! My does have not been near this target so I doubt it has any odor to it that would have attracted him...

I guess there really is a question here....have any of y'all ever seen anything like this? I was absolutely dumbfounded watching him. After about a minute he realized it wasn't going to fight or fornicate with him and he walked off to explore. Does he need counselling? ;-)

  • Ha! Thats great. My yearling buck tried to breed the barn cat the other day so its not only in your barn!

  • Sometimes my does will try to be naughty but usually its a heat cycle or a dominance thing. Your little buck is hilarious. Right now I have a little buckling Br-Udder and he is now 7 months and he drives me crazy as he thinks his body is an amuzement park. I am like GEEEES!!!!!! Your little buck sure is a lucky guy to have a donk that is so patient. He will be ok he just has to work things out a bit! Ha Ha.

  • A month later, I must sadly report that he is now making advances to the gelded mini donkey. I do not know how the donk has refrained from kicking the stuffing out of him, since the (now 8 month old) buck has tried to breed his hocks on several occasions. And he runs around sticking his head under the donk's tail and making "buck" noises....sigh. To make matters worse, I have a young doe who hasn't seemed to settle, who mounts other does, and who hunches up like she's trying to spray herself the way a buck would. I do not know why I am being plagued with these gender and species identification issues! 8-/

  • HAHAHA! I wish my goats were funny! I think they wait till I go to work!

  • Yesterday I bred our little Nike to Jacob. It turned out that Jacob was a bit smaller than Nike and had trouble reaching. Now Jacob is  born in 2010 and this is his first time breeding. The poor little guy was so clumbsy and just kept falling off. Yes we were giggling through is dilema. He got frustrated enough where he started checking out for a smaller doe on the other side of the fence. Well that was not going to happen with Nike so she pushed him away from there and tried to hold his attention. He finally got so frustrated he got up on the fence and just kept rubbing his head as hard as he could as if to say"STUPID, STUPID STUPID"! I felt sorry for him so I took a palate and basically called it his stage. I backed Nike up to him and he scored a touch down. I allowed him to breed her a couple more times but this time when he tried to get up there I would have to give her a gentle push down a bit and he felt like the big man. Some of the trials our little ones go through is really something and yes it does make you giggle. Job well done Jacob!

  • That is just too funny!! Love it! And, its not so strange --- my 4 year old wether still believes the lawn tractor is his competition and "fights" with it whenever it gets parked in the barn. The wheel-barrow is another one he likes to "fight". Though its hard to tell who wins sometimes. :P

Thanks for sharing some good laughs! :)

  • That's too funny :-)  You could give him a stuffed goat for Christmas ;-)
  • Needed a good laugh before heading to bed - thank you both!
  • LOL! There is always something new with goats!  I can't recall one of my bucks being interested in an inanimate object before, but we should probably give the little dude a break since he's young. But counseling couldn't hurt. Maybe your husband could have a man to man talk with him? :)
