Milking stools

It's getting to be about time that I think about purchasing milking equipment. I think I've found what I need for buckets, strip cup, etc., but I'm not at all sure what would be the best milking stool to have. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations?

It might be helpful to add that I'm a pretty short person, just 5 feet.

  • I sit on the ground............!!

But like Diane, I love old wooden milk stools - I used to sit on one last year milking cows, it was lovely!

  • My fancy milking stool is a log stump...

  • My very fancy and fashionable milk stool is a heavy plastic milk crate turned on its side. I've always kind of wanted a lovely antique wooden milk stool, but haven't found one the right height or sturdiness (I was skinny before I started drinking goat milk, and eating goat milk yogurt, and goat milk cheese!).

  • You might need to look often since it is all donations.  I would think that they are usually there a few days but I've been wrong before.<g>  If you have other thrift stores, I would try them also.  You can also join FreeCycle.org and request one there.

Of course, we could buy all we find, paint little goat hooves on the legs and sell them for milk stools!

Thanks Glenna, that's a great idea. I'd imagine those stools would be pretty stable as well. Off to Goodwill tomorrow!

Please don't laugh.  At Goodwill, I picked up the bathtub stool for handicapped people.  I saw it and thought, "That would be perfect for a milking stool!"  It is easy to clean, the right height, and the "loop" handles can be used to hang it out of the way or the legs allow it to be atop a stall wall.  It will also easily support all body types (body behinds<g>).  I had previously used a child's chair.  This is so much better; actually, perfect for me.

Similar to this:  http://www.amazon.com/Moen-DN7025-Adjustable-Shower-White/dp/B000VY... but not adjustable.  Better, $2 is a very good price; I could not build one for that price.

Not asked, but I have also, through the months, picked up two very nice stainless steel cups I use for milking.  One, the little one, for stripping and the other for the milking.  They were likely creamers in their previous life so this is close to what they were manufactured for, unlike my milking stool. <g>
Did I mention I love estate sales and Goodwill?
