Milk without pregnancy?

Hello,

I have a dear friend whose goat appears to have milk but the two boys in the herd are fixed. She didn't acquire the goats for milk but more by happenstance. The female's utters don't appear to be hot but my friend is still concerned. Is it possible for a female to produce milk without being pregnant?

I'm about to enter a retreat so if I don't reply right away, please know that I will still appreciate your thoughts once I have internet service again.

Thank you for reading!

Ellen

  • It doesn't happen very often, but sometimes a doe can develop a precocious udder. The best thing to do is to just leave it alone, and it should eventually go away. Some people have started milking does with a precocious udder, but if you do, you'll have to milk at least once a day. She's probably not producing so much that she'd have to be milked twice a day.
