Maa from a warm barn in Oregon

Thanks WorkingGoats4 it is 2 of my kids from this past spring. Now to introduce myself I got started in the fall of 96 with Nigerians as a 4-H project and since then have had various full size does as well. I have one buck who is very sweet his buddy wether a small buckling that is going to be wethered plus some wethers at a friends and 13 does ( 10 Nigerian and 2 part Nigerian and 1 mostly Nubian) on less then an acre. I mainly milk and am working towards not breeding the does every year. Thanks for the welcome Sarah

  • I also got my start in 4-H, I didn't have goats until after high school, but did horse, dog, rabbit, cooking, and sewing, such a great program for youth!

  • Sarah is my goat mentor. :) I got my first four does from her and she is always willing share to her knowledge or to stop by and help. She also is a first rate house/pet sitter when we go on vacations!
  • YAY!!! Another 4-H Alumni!!! Any more?

  • My county refuses to add a Nigerian only class - so if I show Dairy, I have to show all other purebred. There are some breeders who think that only the 6 main dairy breeds should have a class.

I think I've only won against Saanans. There is a lady who owns Toggs we refuses to let mine show against her son's Toggs. However, the goat committee has decided to let me show my wether in the dairy show against the other wethers - There is even a little side competition - another member is going to bring her aged Nubian wethers for a little challege next year!! Should be fun!

The Pygmy people don't really care that I win every year - they are more of the pet owners and are just happy to show!!

I'm so glad that there is another 4-H alumni here!!
  • After my first year they made a class for the Nigerians but I would be up against the big goats for best in show. In the Nigerian class I was the only one but my first year I had a wether that won over the big wethers other then that I don't remember having any big wins against the big goats I know of some that have, one in my county in the open show took best Jr. doe in show over some other nice big Jr. does. I don't think the Pygmies in my county would have liked it if I had tried to show with them but we had a pretty big group of Pygmies and they were set on being just Pygmies.

I know what you mean about the shows - Because I never bred my does, I show with the Pygmies. However, I do get to show in one dairy class - Produce of Dam, although one dairy person doesn't like that they are allowed to be showen in there, "They're not dairy!" she tells me! Oh well, can't please everyone.

So, did you ever show against other dairy breeds? I did my first and second year and beat some Saanans! How about you?

  • Deborah Right now I only have two does milking so I don't have a lot of extra milk but we have made cheese when we had an over abundance. Mostly soft cheese and mozzarella. Working Goats 4 I was like you I was the only one with Nigerians in my county and I loved to show in 4-H but got to point with the the open shows that I didn't like it. So I haven't done any showing since my last year of 4-H, summer of 02.
