Lopsided udder/teats

What do I do about a 2 day postpartum momma with lopsided udder/teats? Milk comes out of both years but the bigger one seems to be a little slower to let down when I have milked some out to ensure it was working.

  • Yes, this would have happened in a previous freshening if you saw that it was larger before she kidded.

The kids were just born Friday 5.20, around 5pm. Could this have been an issue caused by a previous birth? I bought her pregnant and this larger teat has been happening since the beginning. Really even right after they were born her left teat was bigger.

  • Her teats should be the same size. Sounds like you probably should have milked the least favorite side sooner. Basically it got so overfull that it caused the teat to blow out, so now it's really big. Unfortunately this type of damage is permanent. Keep working with them to nurse on the second side. They can get the hang of it with some practice.

If they are only nursing on one side, I doubt you'll be able to get anything out of the favorite side because they're keeping it drained.

You need to be weighing them daily because they probably won't be able to get enough if they are only nursing on one side. They should be gaining 4 ounces per day.

  • Thank you. I have milked her a few times. I have seen them nursing from the larger side a few times and I keep sticking them over there. I have to help them because her teat is so big they give up. Her other teat is extremely small. I tried to milk that side just to see if I could get some; it was so little I could not get a grip if that makes sense. I have gotten milk from that side before. Maybe the babies were nursing from that side heavily just before I tried.
  • This can happen when you have a single kid or when two kids think that only one side is good enough. (silly kids!) You need to milk the full side so that it doesn't dry up or production doesn't go down.
