Kid with a cold

One of my little house babies has a cold.  We brought her in last Sunday because she was standing in the pen all hunched up and looking miserable.  Already had 3 in the house so she fit right in.  She's doing pretty good - except for her nose.  It's pretty much just a cold but she is so plugged up.  Any suggestions on what to do for her?  I've been giving her children's cold medicine (not a whole lot) and putting a little bit of Vicks on her nose - but she's still pretty plugged up.  She sounds awful and it takes her a while to eat because of the breathing.

I've been wiping her nose on a pretty regular basis - it gets runny then crusty.  I know a cold just has to run it's course but is there anything I can give her that might help it along a little faster.  I am so glad we didn't leave her in the barn so this could turn into pneumonia.

  • Yeah - he wanted her in the house but I'm the one that pays the most attention to her.  For some reason he can't figure out how to feed them. lol

humm I am thinking she is your husbans baby now. Especially since you say it was his idea to bring her in. Who holds her more?
  • Thanks - she seems to be doing okay - just sounds awful.  Guess I'll let it just run it's course.  So glad my hubby is understanding and lets her be in the house (actually bringing her in was his idea - lol).  She's a little doll!

We've only had one kid with this problem, and we used that stuff (can't remember the name right now) that is the livestock version of Vick's. I think it's mostly camphor, menthol, and/or eucalyptus. It took a couple weeks to run its course, because I remember we were really worried about her. We had just bought her, and she came to us at the end of a big show circuit by her breeders, so she'd been on the road for two or three weeks. The stress of all that could have been why it lasted so long with her, because two weeks seems like a long time for a goat to be sick.
