I think I have a milk goat wanna-be :P

So we became so desperate for some fresh goat milk that I took Fifi, my Pygmy/Fainting cross doe, and milked her. Her baby is 3 months old. Of course we didn't get very much milk, but enough to sip some with a cookie and make a batch of french toast. Oh my heavens...I forgot how good fresh milk is.

The funny part is, I've been putting my sweet, cuddly, laid back Oreo on the milk stand for practice, to let her eat and get used to having me handle her udder, and it's taking a while for her to calm down. She doesn't like it at all yet. (Of course she does have attention span issues, but anyway... :P)

Now Fifi, on the other hand...if you look up 'bat-crazy' in the dictionary, you will see her picture. She's very friendly, but the ultimate dork. Part monkey. Loud, goofy, never stands still for more than 3 consecutive seconds, and there isn't a fence in Brewster county that will keep her in.

So I put her on the stand, expecting her to pitch a fit, and she stood there and let me milk her like she'd done it for years. Never twitched. First time ever! It was truly hilarious, considering her quirkiness.

Is it illegal to have this much fun with my goats? :P

  • About 2/3 of a cup once a day, give or take. But it's more than I expected to get, since Giselle is nursing less now so Fifi's production is going down by default. Plus she is a teen mom so her production may be lower for that reason. She was bred at 5 or 6 months old at the previous owner's place.

I think I'd have gotten more if I had started milking when Giselle was younger. Back then Fifi's udder was HUGE. But she stands so still it only takes me a short minute to milk, so it's worth doing. She lets down easily too. Her orifices are smaller than the Nigerians', but her teats compensate since they are big enough to grab!

  • Love it! How much are you getting from her?

  • Haha! Yes, I think Fifi has earned a place on the milk stand. The actual milking was easy, too! Her teat size is as big as my Nigerians, which surprised me, but hey, fresh milk is fresh milk.

  • LOL! Glad to hear you are having so much fun! And you just never know which goats will be angels and which ones will be trouble on the milk stand. One of my friendliest goats is a big snot on the milk stand, and some of my most shy goats are very well behaved. I personally will milk any mammal that will let me! :-)
