How much meat from a Nigerian Wether?

If I'm not going to milk a doe and decide to just let her nurse her kids... let say she has 2 males. I think they get slaughtered at 6 months? Or is that Boers? I'm not sure. How much meat would you actually get from the carcass of a free range (good pasture) and milk fed wether? When do you normally process them?

I'm assuming a spring birth would be more in line with raising meat on pasture.

Thanks,

Tony

  • There is no particular time that you should slaughter them. Personally we usually do it in November because that's when we have to start feeding hay. As for weight ... that depends on so much! I see so many people with little Nigerians because they don't weigh the kids and have no idea how fast they should be gaining. My best milkers have had kids weigh 50 pounds live weight by 6-7 months, but sadly I get emails from people with kids that weigh half of what they should at various ages because of poor management. Dressed weight is usually about 50-60% of live weight.
