How do you treat lice?

Hello everyone. After noticing excessive foot stomping and licking I have noticed that one of my does shed out heavily and now has some bald patches. I am convinced it is lice although I cant see anything. She does seem to be excessively scaley. We have noticed this type of coat from time to time on our angus cattle and we treat them with Ivermectin pour-on. I would like to treat the whole herd and the new ponies we purchased recently as I have a feeling that the ponies brought on this whole mess. I have some Privermectin cattle pour on ( 5mg ivermectin per ml). Recommended dosage is 1 mL per 22 lbs. Is this right for goats? Also I have one doe due to kid in May and the other in July-is this safe for them? We do use this on pregnant cattle. I also have some Zimecterin Gold (ivermectin 1.55% / praziquantel 7.75% paste. The paste does not say that it would kill lice on the package but the pour -on does. Has anyone ever treated this. Would like some info as we have never had this happen to our goats before. Thanks!

  • If it's just ivermectin, it's okay for pregnant does. They say not to use it on milking does because they don't know what the withdrawal time is. We wait three weeks, just to be safe. There is a pour-0n that has a milk withdrawal time of 0, but I can't remember what it is at the moment.

    Deborah,

So can I use the pour-0n for the pregnant does too? Also, how long would you do a milk withdrawal? Unfortunately, I wont be able to clip until June at least, we get too cold here. I googled an article from the American Dairy Goat Journal that says you can ignore a mild case of lice. The warm summer sun would take care of them and that they dont do well in increased light. Still I dont know if I want to wait that long. The hair on the doe I mentioned is growing in slowly, but I dont want it to get out of hand.

  • I have not had any luck with oral ivomec treating lice. I use the pour-on for cattle and double the cattle dosage. Lice are usually gone within 24 hours of using it.

If you are in an area where you can clip this time of year, that will get rid of lice, because they have no hair to hide in.

Sevin is a plant insecticide, so I personally wouldn't put it on an animal. Most plant insecticides talk about having all sorts of side effects and dangers if people are exposed to them, so I don't think it would be good for animals either.
  • I assume the Ivomec plus is the injectable that you give orally in goats. I have never used this. I have also heard about being cautious when using this with pregnant does. I will ask my vet tomorrow but would also like to hear what others think. I am also worried about milk withdrawal.
  • Dianea,

What dosage do you use? Is it safe for the pregnant ones?

    Thanks!
