How do I know (pricing kids question)

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I've got some questions about how to price my goat kids. Well, actually, how to sell them.

Willow will be kidding in April, but I've already got people interested in information...only I'm not sure what to tell them. Is it customary to take deposits before the kids are born, or after, when we know what we are working with?

Also, what are general prices for doelings, bucklings, and wethers?

If they can be registered with ADGA, do/can I advertise them as dairy goats? Should I register them before selling? And if so, how much more do I charge for registration costs/my extra work?

I think that's it for now, but I may find that I have more questions later.

Also, if there is a post that explains this, I'd love to read it.

Thanks!

  • Ok great. I don't own the buck, so I'll include that with the registration application. Thanks!

  • Service memos are given when you have a buck that serviced someone else's doe. If you are selling the kids, there is no need to give service memos, assuming you owned the bucks at time of breeding. If the sire was owned by someone else, then you would need to get the service memo from the buck's owner to include with the the registration application. If you owned both parents, then you just need to fill out the application and give that to the buyer.

  • Thanks Deborah. Good advice, and pretty much what I've heard from others. That's a great point about not spending deposits---I hadn't gotten that far in my thinking, but it makes a lot of sense.

I am thinking that it will take a few years to understand what kind of producers I have here, so I'll likely sell them as dairy goats, but, like you said, not push it too much since I have no idea what their capabilities are as milkers.

Registration applications sounds like a good thing to include, plus I think I'll include the service memo as well. I had to track mine down for a few months before I could register one of my does.

  • It is totally up to you as to whether or not you want to take deposits before kids are born. If you do, you shouldn't spend the money just in case you wind up not being able to fulfill their request. If they want a doe, and the goat only has bucks, you'd need to give them a refund.

Prices can vary a little bit in different parts of the country, but for registered NDs, $300 is a common starting place. They can go as high as $1000 or even more, if you have a goat that is a finished champion with milk stars and/or on the Top Ten list for production or has several Es in classifications. Wethers are $50 to $150 depending upon what part of the country you're in. I've been charging $75 for wethers since I started.

NDs are a breed of dairy goat, but I wouldn't push that much if you are not milking them because you really don't know what they're capable of producing.

Most people sell kids with registration applications.
