How common are sterile goats

Ive got 2 does that i think are sisters. There history is unknown. My friend bought them in March from a auction.  After realizing how wild they were he sold them to my at the end of April. April was in heat and went strait to my buck he did his thing and bred her and that was it she would not except him again. So if she took she is due at the end of Sept. To my eye which i am not that experienced ive seen no changes in her. No utter development no vulva changes atleast that i could tell.  I figure by the first of Sept i should see something i hope.

Daisy May the other doe is my main problem. As far as i know she has never had a heat cycle here and my young buck never trys to mount her like he does with my other doe who 3 month ago had a baby. So  she had to be bred at the auction or sometime before. Problem is she also looks very unprego. Ive cought her mounting her sister when she was in heat and she trys to mount her from time to time not sure if its a dominice thing or something else. I had planed on doing a blood test but as wild as they are im not sure i could hold them still Daisy is strong and could easliy drag me across the yard. So whats the chance that i got 2 goats that wont ever carry a baby? I start thinking why were they at the action there young less then 3 yrs old did the owner have problems selling them was there problems with money or did they know they were sterile. I know i need to calm down and wait 1 more month but to me i see no changes like i seen in my other doe. So im starting to worry.

  • I wanted to update.. April kidded a little doe  September 22 never did look prego.  She was  early at 143 day but healthy. Her name is Autumn. You can see pics of her on my Facebook page. And Daisy came into heat like a week after i asked about her and im on kidding watch with her right know.

  • There are a number of reasons why a goat might not get pregnant. A vet might suggest giving her lutalyse and/or another drug to make her cycle. But you have to ask yourself how much money you want to spend on her. Unless she had some amazing genetics that I would otherwise lose, I'd probably sell her without papers as a pet.

We have one doe that we have multiple times put with our buck and she doesn't get pregnant.  She never seems to go into heat and we have even left her in the pen with the buck multiple months.  So is it possible that she is sterile? We are thinking about selling her as a pet only.

  • Goats cycle every 21 days give or take a day, and they are only in heat for about 24 hours and really can only get pregnant for a few hours of that.
  • Thanks for the info. I was thinking  ND cycled every 30 days roughly. But with this heat i could think that would stop any cycling. I seen the buck get up there do his thing it looked like a sucess but then she did not want to be around him.  So i figured if i dont see nothing they might be bred. I only pen bred as i dont have room to separate the buck. I cant stand to lock him in the little 15ft by 10 ft pen.  So i need to be patient and give them tell spring. Which is hard to do when i want babies there soo cute lol. But if all 3 of my does get bred then i could have atleast 3 babies to play with next spring so i can be happy then.

Thanks for the info i was close to culling them due to this heat im haveing trouble finding hay. And when i due it $5 or more which is $2 more then what i payed last yr So im slowly buy up tell i hope i have plenty to make it threw the winter.

  • Sterile goats are extremely uncommon. I personally don't know of any. Although NDs are supposed to be year-round breeders, I have not always had the best luck with off-season breeding. If a doe only let a buck breed her once, she may not have been in standing heat. I don't normally take a doe out of the buck's pen until I've seen them breed four or five times. If a buck breeds a doe once, and then she's running from him, he probably just surprised her that time! I've had that happen before, and the doe does NOT get pregnant. I rarely see does come into heat between April and September. A few come into heat in August, but I don't usually see everyone in heat until October. If you don't see them in heat by December, you might want to pen breed. Whenever I had a goat that wouldn't get pregnant, that has always worked. Some goats can be hard to catch in heat at the right moment.
