How can I tell if my kids need a re-burn?

My kids were disbudded at 1 week old by an experienced local farmer, and I felt very confident that they were done correctly, so didn't pay much attention to the burns since then--but now, at 3 1/2 weeks, I've noticed that all of them, even the doelings, who had barely discernable bumps at the time of disbudding, have a raised, hardened ridge all around the edge of the burn area.  It's maybe 1/8 inch  high on each of them.  Are these scurs?

  • OOOOOH.  Of course it's a scab.  That makes sense.  Thanks, ladies.

  • I know when our goats where disbudded they got an almost "scab" around the burn site.  It was raised like your describing.  After a few more weeks that whole thing fell off to a smooth skin.  I think this is how it heals the skin and regrows new under the burn site.  I imagine it to be similar as to when we get a cut and as the new skin begins to grow the scabs start to raise and eventually falls off.  Hope this makes since...  I do not believe it is scurs :0)

  • If it really goes all the way around the whole area like a circle, I would say that it's just the scab-like thing that forms after disbudding. Once the scabs fall off, you should be able to tell if anything is growing.
