How do I know if my adult buck is sick or not? He is making grunting noises, and he's not quite himself. Crying, and sticking his tongue out a little. Its 80 degrees today, warmer than it has been, could he just be hot? I gave him some probiotics and a little baking soda with water through a syringe.... He lives with another buck and a steer.

Thanks for the input. No females close by, but I think he is just in the mood. He isnt bloated, and is eating and drinking and chewin just like usual. I just got paranoid I guess with his new behaviors... :) Thanks alot ladies!
The first thing I look for is, are they chewing their cud? Walking around? When a goat gets sick they literally hang their head and will not be chewing their cud. Probiotics are helpful. Is he bloated? I have used an olive oil drench that helps with bloat. Most important for goats is fresh water, if they think someone breathed on the water they may turn their nose up at it. Give fresh water often, even wash the bucket often. With bucks especially, they need plenty of water and a salt lick to increase water intake, watch for the development of urinary calculi, deposits in the urinary tract that can obstruct urination, making it difficult even impossible to urinate.
I have to agree with Deborah on this one. There is nothing in the animal world as ridiculous as a buck when a girl in season is nearby!! My buck makes the goofiest faces when one of the girls is ready.

If he's walking around, eating, chewing his cud, he's probably fine. Is there a girl around that might be in heat? That makes them act ridiculous. They make a lot of grunting noises and stick out their tongue and curl their upper lip and pee on themselves.
