Hello everyone I'm new here have not kept Goats since the 80's

I just put a deposit down on two nigerian dwarf does and a buck and am eagerly awaiting their arrival in 10 weeks or so. I also have more reservations at another farm and they have not yet been born yet. So you never know. 

I live in Arkansas with my husband who has said he will help me with the goats. We are moving to a lot with only 1.7 acres so it will be a challenge to keep them in grass and browse. So I'm planting the pasture in sericea lespedeza and alfalfa and will try to find that fescue that is endophyte free. Wish me luck. Finding Alfalfa hay will be a challenge in Arkansas.

We are still building barn and fencing and cleaning up after the contractors mess they left. So terribly busy. But I have been making time to read this forum. 

I've already read Debra's book cover to cover and started in on Pat Colbys book this week. I am sure I will be consulting them frequently. I bought electric mesh netting and a charger so I can rotationally graze the small lot I have.

 

I'm looking forward to taking them on walks thru the woods. So that might be interesting. er... maybe on a leash at first.

    Good tip. Thanks I will. Now I just have to survive these 10 weeks of waiting for my babies to get weaned and drive to Ohio to get them. I have a darling little polled buck coming! Do you know if there are any local shows?

    Yes, very close. You can write to the chafhaye people and they will send a sample, or at least they did me. Mine wouldn't eat it though.

    Thanks, I'm in Paragould so we are pretty close. I found some alfalfa in MO and will have to drive there so I have enough to get them used to grass  hay. I think I will use a lot of pellets and maybe look into Chafhaye.

    Welcome. I am in Arkansas also, in the North East, in Pocahontas. Yes, Alfalfa is a challenge to find, I use bermuda hay and alfalfa pellets. I raised mine from a bottle and have had no problem with taking them on walks, they also stay close to me when just out in the yard. Enjoy
