Hay is in...

We have 4 gals and a buck eating hay through the winter here.  I have been feeding less than a bale a week and that seems to be enough. The husband gets lots of browse to hang over the fence and ,of course there are the goat walks.
Today we went for hay, orchard grass and timothy. We have bought from this fellow before and the goats love it. We bought 54 bales (all we could carry on the truck and trailer) and he will hold 20 more for us.
We expect babies in the winter and then again late spring if the small ones are ready to be bred.
I'm pretty sure we have enough.  What do you think?

  • Thankfully I have a husband who always seems to err in the plus side and when we had goats before we never ran out so I think we are okay. Back then we were putting in close to 200 bales for our Nubians and Boers.
I am smitten, however, with these easy keepers that give the most delicious milk!
  • Assuming they will go through twice as much hay in the winter, you should have enough. But as someone who has run out of hay in the middle of winter, my philosophy is better to have too much than not enough!
