Grain Recommendations

We have 3 does. 2 are twins (born March 12, 2012) and the oldest was born Feb 2011.  Don't know if age matters really but just in case :) We have a small, maybe 1/2 acre pasture, and come winter it will not provide enough for them. We have good hay that we will give but was wondering about giving feed. We are a little scared because we just had a scare with the older goat having parasite overload and we almost lost her and the vet said it could be because we changed her feed. The breeder we got her from did not give feed at all and we started giving it to her when we got her to help her socialize with us. What kind of feed do you guys feed, how often, etc. We have no plans of breeding anyone this year.

  • Dry does do NOT need grain after about six months of age if they are healthy are a good size ... like around 30 pounds. Feeding grain will just cause them to get overweight. They also don't need alfalfa hay if you can get a good quality grass hay.

As long as you make feed changes gradually, the goats shouldn't have any problems.

If you ever plan to breed your does, they should kid by age two for best results.

  • oh and we live in NC in case that matters..lol
