One of my does has an intermittent (couple days a week) eye discharge (out of both eyes)...kind of a yellow-ish discharge. This has been going on for 3-4 weeks. Every time I think she is getting better, I go out the next day and she'll have more "goop". It started after she came back from the goat farm I took her to be bred - they kept her for a few days (it's the same place I purchased her, so I trust their business, but they do have a lot of goats). I tried looking in my goat books, but didn't find anything on eye infections or eye issues even. Is this a vet call? Or is there something that I can do at home to help treat? I appreciate any input. Janet

  • Her eyes (meaning the eyeballs) look totally normal, it's just the drainage, and it's in both eyes. Now I'm wondering whether it just occurs at a certain time of day, like when she is getting up (maybe the bedding, which is straw.....). I'll have to track that.

I've been meaning to get your book....now I have even more incentive!

    Thanks.
  • Raising Goats Naturally has a section on conjunctivitis. Typically it turns the eyeball blue or white and can even cause blindness, although that's usually temporary. It can easily be treated at home. There are over the counter meds, but some people just squirt an injectable antibiotic into the eye, such as Biomycin if you have it on hand. I've never seen an eye infection that only caused drainage, so I'd wonder about dust or something just irritating the eye. And your goat would not have pinkeye if the other farm didn't. Also you don't usually see eye infections this time of year because they're transmitted by flies, although could also be caused by an injury.
