Flying Goats?

I have an offer on one of my does, and the buyer is on the other side of the country. I think the doe is bred, but not positive. If she is, she is due sometime between the end of Feb and the end of March. We were supposed to ship her just after the new year, but that date has been pushed back to the end of January. I'm a little concerned about shipping her (15 hrs crate time) that close to her possible due date. Do you think it would be a problem?

  • Delta won't fly any animals if the temp at the departure airport is below 10 degrees, Continental will fly anytime because they have climate controlled waiting areas as well as flight compartments.

Our temps here have been fairly comparable to the temps where she is going in Georgia, so there won't be a big climate shock. Just the possibility of her being 6-9 weeks out from kidding.

I supposed I could try doing a bio-tracking pg test on her, since we have the additional wait before shipping.
  • I definately wouldn't ship if she's that close. With the temperatures, it's not a good time to ship. There are many things that could go wrong and it would be a big loss for both parties if something were to happen, like aborting.
  • Didn't think of this until after I'd posted my first comment, but if you're shipping to or from a cold part of the country, shipping in winter is just about impossible. Most airlines won't ship an animal if it's below a certain temperature anywhere along the route. It's been a couple years since I've had to worry about this, but I'm thinking it's 40 degrees. It's something really ridiculous if you know goats, but then again, I don't know how much colder it is at 30,000 feet, so maybe that's why they have the limit set so high. If you call the airline or check their website, you can find out.
  • I've never shipped a goat that pregnant, so I don't have any personal experience with it, but I wouldn't want to ship one within six weeks of her due date. I don't even like selling one that close to her due date.
