Fixing a wet and muddy pen.

Hello all.

The weather here in Western NY has been wet and raining with the occasional appearance of the sun.

We just recently moved here and have an acre of land.  Approximately 1/2 the acre is available to use as goat area.  At the moment we have them in a 10 x 20 yard and I have a calf hutch I use for shelter.  The barn is coming soon.  But until then, this is what I have.  They were very happy at our last location using this same area.  Our last home was mostly clay and rock so it was not muddy even with the wet weather.  Our current location is completely sopping wet!  There is no location for them that does not turn into a muddy mess.

Does anyone have suggestions on what I could do to fix this problem?  We can't change mother nature for sure.

The pen is set up on a high area under an apple tree right now.

Thanks!!!

  • Can you add gravel or straw to at least a section of their area?

  • I made sleeping benches for my goats out of old pallets that work wonderfully. We took some of the boards off the bottom and screwed them into the top so it's a nice surface and no one's hooves can get stuck in them. Maybe you could do something like that but on the ground so they can get up off the mud if they want to? The mud can be really hard on their hooves as well :/ Sorry to hear about your muddy situation!
