First freshener, due February 24th, kidded today.

Our doe kidded tody, 1 buckling, she wasn't due until February 24th. We lost the buckling, is it possible she may kid again around her due date? She barely bagged up and still seems large, no afterbirth yet. This is our first kidding so we are very inexperienced so any advice is appreciated.

  • She's the oldest doe the others are younger then her. They do jostle each other around but I havent ever seen severe attacks. I'm sure something could of happened but we just didn't see it.  They have loose minerals from Bio-Ag,  premix goat mineral (organic) & natural trace salt (loose). If it is copper deficiency,  how do I test for that?  Should we necropsy the kid? She has sticky creamy goo from her teats, should I worry about milking her or her getting mastitis? Her udder is just slightly enlarged. So hard to listen to her cries...

  • So sorry for your loss. Sorry to say that she is done. The reason she doesn't have any milk is because her body was not ready to be feeding a baby yet. That's typical for such an early delivery. Reasons for giving birth that early are trauma and copper deficiency. If this doe was low on the totem pole and being beaten up a lot, that could do it, or copper deficiency also causes premature births. We used to have a lot of those before we realized we had a problem.

  • She just finished passing the afterbirth. She doesn't want us to leave her, every time we get up or move around she cries. So heartbroken.... appreciate the condolences.

  • So sorry you lost your little boy.  My best wishes for your doe, hoping she has a full and rapid recovery.

  • So sorry to hear of your loss. I'm new too, so don't have any advice, but I know others will.

Best wishes to your doe and may things work out in the future.
