Fencing

Always a great goat discussion!

We have a chunk of woods that I'd like to fence for our goats and I'd love recommendations.  I'd like to find something that looks nice but is on the lesser end of cost and labor.  Yeah yeah, I know...

How do you fence your goats?  What's worked best and what was a waste of time?

I struggle HUGELY with getting welded wire taut and decent looking and don't want a saggy, loopy fence situation.  I also have five cattle panels that I occasionally move around and could add to those for a semi-permanent fence, although it's useless for kids.

I have one doe and one whether with plans to add at least one more doe.  They currently have a 6 ft welded wire enclosure that works great but is on the smaller side.  They're not big escape artists but I know the doe can hop a 4 ft fence with ease (we only have them because they showed up at our house as escapees from a neighbor's last summer;) ).

Thanks in advance!

  • We use moveable metal fences which are great - they are in 8 parts and I tied them together at each corner so I can move them two at a time.  The spacing is too wide to keep the kids in - I tried using rope to make lattice at the bottom as you can see in the pic - but that didn't work either!  I think there should be more bars welded at the bottom to make the spacing smaller there.  It does work on uneven ground as the parts are not fixed together so can move up and down as necessary.

  • We use Premier's ElectroNet for sheep and goats in areas like that. You might need an extra step-in post in a few spots to keep it from sagging in some places that are uneven. It's temporary fencing.

  • I would love to fence in parts of my woods for the goats as well.  But I live on the world's most uneven land. I'm hoping someone has some ideas, too.
