Depressed Doe

We sold our whether a few days ago and his dam has seemed kind of depressed since then.  He was 7 months old, so not nursing or even in the same fence as her, but he is the kid that she raised.  She has company and nothing else in our routine has changed.  But she has been mopey, mainly just laying in her little dog house and her milk has gone down significantly.  It rained a lot yesterday, which didn't help her mood.
I gave her some extra grain today to make sure the drop in milk wasn't because of a lack of nutrition.  Any suggestions on what else to do for her?

  • Yes, she just misses him. We've noticed that our does' production can go down after we sell a kid. Hopefully it will go back up in a few days and she'll be back to normal.
  • I know too well that they miss their friend. I would just spend more time with her, brushing her, if she likes it. I would offer treats too, like an apple. As long as she is still eating for you she may pull out of it with a little time. Does she have other goat friends? You mentioned she has company, they are a herding animal and she may just miss her goat friend.
