Copper, Deworming & Pregnancy

My girls are in their last month of pregnancy are starting to look pale AGAIN. Last time (last spring)I was told to deworm with Ivomec 10 days apart 3 times. They looked better but have always been more pale than i would like. I have dewormed every 3 months since then. I am beginning to think they may need copper. I have never given it to them thinking  their feed and minerals would supply enough. If I give the copper can I give it to them without having to shove a pill down their throat?  :(

And is it safe to give this close to kidding?

If I give the copper do I still deworm right after kidding ?

  • I will thanks! I was wrong about when I did the dewormer x3. It was Jan 13 '11.  Practically same time last year. Hummmm?

I have disliked using the chemical dewormers since the beginning. I have Mollys and hoegger herbal dewormers but have been afraid to switch not having anyone that knows much about them to talk to. After these babies arrive I would like to start. When your doing the chemical schedule its hard to know where and how to switch ! Ive been afraid I would completely screw things up and do more harm than good. I read neg things about using wormwood. But also wondered how that could be any worse than the chemicals. I do have a microscope too!

  • They say that goats on dry lot have less problem with worms -- at least with barberpole. You might see a big improvement after you do the copper. Let us know how it goes!

Thank you! I was so leary about copper but after research I have realized its hard to overdose with the wire particles. I ordered the copasure from Jeffers and will start there. What is the dosage ??

They really aren't on pasture. Basically a dry lot right now. Except for a few leaves that fall. I will do a fecal too before deworming. I will feel better once I get the copper in them since that will help with barberpole too.

Yes, you can give the copper oxide wire particles by sprinkling it on their feed. You can give it whenever, and you may or may not need to deworm after they kid. If you have not had FAMACHA training, you should probably get a fecal to make sure they really need it. If you are not rotating pastures, however, you very well may have a parasite problem, especially with this wet, warm winter we've been having.

You might want to pop over to the current discussion on deworming where we have been talking about the fact that deworming on a schedule and doing repeated dewormings is a bad idea because it leads to parasite resistance of dewormers.

  • Thinking part of my problem is the 70+ inches of rain we have had in the last year!
