Copper

If you notice little to no change after giving a doe a 2 gram copper bolus 2 weeks ago...would you give her another? Or am I being to impatient? :) Thanks!

  • just my opinion, my adults given 4G of copper bolus, don't show anything until about a month or so.

  • Last year I had a goat that looked pitiful too.  She was just not doing well.  I tried everything to get her healthy but nothing was working I added organic kelp, sunflower seeds, cowp...all my other goats looked fine.  I had found out about the Sweetlix minerals on this site and found a place to purchase them.  It's a two hour drive one way but I buy in bulk and it saves me on shipping.

I can't tell you how wonderful those minerals are!  In just a few weeks all my goats started shedding their coats and their new coats looked so good.  Leah had a complete turn around.  I am very happy with Sweetlix and appreciate all the good information that is shared on this site.

  • Thanks so much ladies! I'm going to get some Sweetlix and switch her to orchard grass. Hopefully that'll fix it. She looks pitiful! :(
  • I'm so glad you thought of that, Emily! Looks like there is more than twice as much zinc in the Sweetlix as in the Manna Pro. I know last time I compared them, the Manna Pro was a lot lower in most nutrients. Looks like they've finally increased their copper, but the Sweetlix still has 4 times as much selenium as Manna Pro.

  • Leah, I used to use Manna Pro minerals, but recently switched to Sweetlix Meatmaker and I am SO happy that I did. I ordered it from Jeffers after comparing the nutritional information of the two mineral mixes. All of my goats ran over and started inhaling it like it was candy, even though I had just given them the last of the manna pro the day before. Maybe that would make a difference too?

I give mine BOSS as well and they love them :) I hope you find something that works! Good luck with your doe!

Is there anything I can give as a zinc supplement besides manna pro minerals?
  • I'll try the sunflower seeds. I didn't want to do the injectable for that reason. When the vet was here in Jan to draw blood on everyone he said she didn't have mites. So I'll do the sunflower seeds and switch her to grass hay and see how that goes. It has definitely gotten worse since she is dried up. Thank so much for your help!!
  • Multi-Min injectable has zinc in it, although it also has copper and selenium, so you could wind up with toxicity issues if your goats have plenty of those things.

I've heard o people using zinc capsules for humans, but I've never tried it myself.

Sunflower seeds have a decent amount of zinc in them, and back when we had a problem with zinc deficiency in our bucks, I figured out that about a cup of sunflower seeds a week provided a decent amount.

Zinc deficiency can be caused by too much calcium in the diet, so if this doe is getting alfalfa and she is not pregnant or in milk, she might do better on a grass hay until near the end of her next pregnancy when her need for calcium goes up. That's why my bucks got zinc deficient. One year I couldn't get any grass hay, so they were getting alfalfa, and about halfway through the winter, some of them started blowing their coats and foaming at the mouth. It was rather scary.

  • Hair loss can also be mites. Pour-on ivermectin (between the shoulder blades) kills them. You could also be right about the zinc.

  • We have a herd of 40 goats and she's the only one I've had a problem with. I own her dam and grand dam and they are both fine. She's got me stumped! :)
