Clipping Questions

Howdy!

I have a few questions on clipping.

1)  We were given a WAHL  Stable Pro clipper along with a #5 attachment and two of the same blade sets ( Animal Adjustable Blade Set 30-15-10 Standard 3/64 " - 3/32 " cut).   Are these good for show clipping?  If not, what would you recommend?

2) When do you clip your goats for showing?  Is it okay to do it one -one and one -half months before a show?

3) How do you clip does? bucks?  young goats?

Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it!!! :)

  • We used Oster clippers with a size 10 blade, and we'd usually clip a few days up to a week or 10 days before the show. By a month, they're starting to get a little long. We also put them on a milkstand, and we'd use alfalfa pellets to keep them busy while we clipped.

  • I can't really suggest much about the brand/size of a clipper because I only have two and they both work great so I don't have anything to compare them to. I have a Conair clipper I use for the body and a mini Wahl clipper I use for the ears, face, legs, and tail. I'm not sure exactly what size they are.

I wanted to do a video tutorial for clipping goats but I completely spaced it when I did my goats yesterday. Sorry! One of my doelings is a pure angel when I clip her but the other is a mess. I put them on the milkstand and have someone feed them a mixture of alfalfa pellets with carrot and celery bits, piece by piece. When I do their neck, ears, and face I turn them around on the milkstand so they are facing backwards as my helper holds them with a leash around their neck and entertains them with the snack bits. They are going to wiggle but you just have to deal with it as best as you can. Lots of patience and a positive attitude is necessary! Older ones are usually a lot better behaved but that's not always the case. Typically they are shaved about 2 weeks before a show.
