cd&t at disbudding

If I gave my doe her cd&t vaccination a month before kidding do the kids need it again when they are disbudded???  When I called to make appt at the vet the girl said they would need it again. I was under the impression they have immunity now then they get it again at a few weeks of age.

  • Sorry I was thinking that was something they test for.  We haven't done testing on the herd yet.  Was going to send in blood work for everyone in May after all the babies are born.  So pretty much the same schedule as if the mother was immunized.  Thanks Deborah.  All my goats are up to date on their immunizations, just didn't do it during pregnancy.

  • A lot of people immunize at four weeks and eight weeks.

What are you talking about testing for? The vaccine is for clostridium and tetanus. You don't test for those.

  • If I didn't immunize my doe during pregnancy, when is a good time to start with the babies.  We forgot to do it.  All my animals have tested negative and honestly I don't immunize my human babies, so I'm pretty complacent when it comes to animals!! Not really knowing the history of our property, I would like to immunize for a few years and then eventually not immunize after we've tested negative for a few years.

  • Thank you Deborah :)

Most people would say it is a waste of money to give it at disbudding if the dam was immunized, and I would say it's a waste of money regardless of whether or not the doe was immunized. The disbudding iron is about a thousand degrees, so it kills everything. The risk of tetanus from disbudding is when the scab starts to separate from the skin in a few weeks because there is an anaerobic environment under that scab, which is the type of environment in which tetanus thrives. However, they don't get tetanus if they are not exposed to it. Of course, you don't know if you have tetanus on your farm, but if your animals live in a clean environment, odds are extremely low that even an unimmunized kid would get tetanus from disbudding.
