Can a doe's heat get less intense?

We have a doeling, Abigail, who is almost a year old.

She first came into heat at nine months and she has definitely been in heat three times.

Each time it was very obvious. She's normally a vocal goat, but she'd get extra loud and talkative and make constant little grunting noises and hang around all the boys and grunt at them and wag her tail.

Today I saw one of the wethers jump on her and she basically ignored him and then some of them starting fighting around her, but when they went after her later, she ran away. And I know she's a big tease, even when she's not in heat, but usually when she's flirting she'll just hop in front of another wether and jump away and back. This time she actually seemed distressed and went to hide behind her mother, even though she was letting them mount her before.

So I was wondering if maybe sometimes does have less intense heats sometimes, or they get less intense after the first few times or something. We've been keeping track and she should be coming back in heat around now or within a week or so.

Or I was wondering if she just got momentarily confused or something since there was another doe who was actually in heat?

  • Heats do vary from one time to the next. If she was standing while a goat mounted her and then would run away later, you probably saw her at the very end of her heat.
