Buck housing

Hi everyone!

I am trying to design my buck housing and need some opinions. My thought is an area 64' x 128' (since cattle panels come in 16' sections)-with the buck shelter in the exact middle. The shelter would have four closable doors (is closable a word?). Then the whole enclosure would be divided into four 64' x 32' areas. So I could close 3 doors and the bucks could go out on one section for a week or so, then open a different door and let them out on a different 64x32 section...etc. Does this sound reasonable and more important, is it BIG enough for two bucks? Yes, newbie idiot bought TWO bucklings (unrelated). We would then run hot wire around the outside for predator protection and inside if the bucks got too busy with the fence.  WILL hot wire outside really help? I am really ambivalent about LGDs because I already have 5 dogs and dogs live inside (to me). The does will have more room but I haven't completely figured out how I am going to configure their pastures. I can't quite figure out yet how to rotate and still give them access to the big barn-may have to do a run-in type shelter outside and bring them into the big barn at night and at kidding time. ANY input would be greatly appreciated!

  • Thanks Deborah. That's sort of what I thought, regarding two bucks.
  • Sounds like a good plan. And there was nothing wrong with buying two bucks. You'd have to buy a second one next year anyway, if you keep a doeling.
