Has anyone had experience with brewer's mash?
This evening, I picked up some brewer's mash from a friend which she got from a local organic micro-brewery for her hens. I'm hoping Capri likes the mash.
A man we knew years ago made a very nice living before our local Lucky Lager brewery closed, picking up the mash and selling it to the dairies around the county (when we had them!). It helped increase their milk production so it was like gold. If it does the same for Capri, that would be wonderful.
I'll give Capri a taste in the morning after I milk her. My friend froze it when she got it for her hens so I have it thawing to freeze in small quantities. It could also be made in droplets like small cookies and used for a treat if she really likes it.
Had a bad sign this morning - after I milked Capri and released Ginger, Ginger's first stop was *not* mom to get her first morning milk. I count on Ginger taking that last bit of milk to help production; she can do a much better job of emptying Capri's udder than I can right now. I'm doing better overall but still am learning to get the right feel for it. It's really odd; this morning I got more milk from the right side, more than half, whereas usually it's the left side that gives most and is easiest to milk. I'm beginning to think I need to turn the stand 90 degrees and try milking from both sides, stripping one side then milking the other. It might help to introduce music to the equation. She does look forward to her morning apple treat after milking but not sure if she is associating it with me milking her.
