Breeding question

My first freshener was bred in November but showed strong heat signs in December so was bred again and stood for the breeding. She is now two months away from kidding and is enormous! What are the chances the first breeding took but she still cycled and showed heat signs anyways three weeks later? Anybody have this happen before?

  • Yes, it is possible that she got pregnant the first time. I've had this happen twice and got surprised by kids a month early. It is also possible that she is just wide, especially if she is shorter bodied. Long-bodied does can hide four kids surprisingly well! Shorter-bodied does can look enormous with only twins. Keep an eye on the udder. If she gets an udder in the next couple of weeks, I'd be looking for kids sooner rather than later. This is more dependable with her being a first freshener. Both times this happened to me was with senior does, and they can start to get an udder a little earlier than FFs.
