Breeding

Hello, I am new to breeding this year and had a question. I have 2 female goats that we are breeding. Our first one got pregnant on the first attempt. The second didn't. We brought her back to the breeder last month and she was successfully bred several times. It seemed like she had a very abbreviated heat this month though. Is it possible to show signs of being in heat after getting pregnant? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Thank you both for replying. That is the answer I expected. The only reason I asked it was because this heat cycle was so abbreviated. Only a few hours that I saw signs as opposed to her normal two days. I guess we will have to go back to the breeder again. Thank you
  • As Julianne says, it is possible, but if a doe comes back into heat, it's more likely that she's not pregnant. The situation Julianne mentioned where the doe comes back into heat five days later has always been the true heat, as she said. However, you didn't say exactly when she came back into heat. It sounds like she came back into heat a month or so after her last heat. If so, that could be a false heat, although it usually means the doe isn't pregnant. I just had this happen to us this year -- the doe came back into heat 3 weeks after being bred, even though she was pregnant -- and the last time it happened was with this doe's mother several years ago. The only reason I know she's pregnant is because we did a pregnancy test, even though I totally expected it to be negative.

  • It is possible, but not probable. My doe did this to me last year. She was bred successfully, good penetration and butt-tuck, etc., so I assumed we were a go. About 5 days later, she came back into heat. I've since learned that the second heat is the "true" heat. She didn't go back into heat after that, so I thought it was a false heat. Nope, turns out she is a seasonal breeder, like full size dairy goats.

This year, I did a pen breeding with her. She didn't come back into heat, but I still don't know if she's pregnant because that was only 8 weeks ago. Long story short, if she comes into heat again, try breeding her again for as long as she will stand for the buck. If she doesn't come back in heat, just keep an eye on her. I'm hoping you'll get lucky and she really did take the last time!
