Breeding

Need some advice. My little doe is is pregnant and due in January. This is the first time breeding and need to what to look for as to when she is close to having kids. Is there anything I should do before the kids come and what should I have on hand in case I have to help her? All help would be helpful.

  • Also the search box in the top right corner will filter out threads to help you find the specific information you're looking for. I didn't find that right away when I started using this site. The book Raising Goats Naturally has an excellent chapter on kidding and what you need and what to expect.

  • That is a really huge question. I actually teach a 2-3 hour class answering your question, so it isn't something that can be summed up in a couple of sentences. There are also a lot of old discussions on here about kidding, including what to have on hand. Here is a list of things that some people like to have on hand: http://nigeriandwarfgoats.ning.com/forum/topics/my-goat-kit

Other than that, there are 299 discussion on here already about kidding. This list starts with the most recent:

Here is a birth video that we made in 2009:

But if you click on "Videos" at the top of the page, you'll find others.

If you want the information in a more ordered fashion, Raising Goats Naturally includes a section on kidding, and it is available through lots of libraries, if you don't want to buy it.

If you have any specific questions, just ask!

  • This is going to be my first kidding as well. My first doe is due beginning of Feb. I just gave my doe a BoSe shot. My vet said to give it about 6 weeks prior to kidding. Deborah suggests free choice selenium, but at $5.00 for all of my pregnant doe I found the injections much more cost efficient...
Good luck kidding, post pictures when kids come! :-)
