Blood in post-birth doe's urine

Looking for benign reasons for blood in my Ginger's urine.

I took a sample to the vet but have not heard back. When I first noticed it, it was more bright red. I followed her around to get a sample which was more brown. This is Day 17 from kidding (lost both babies, hand delivered by vet). Her temp is 102.2, eating normally as near as I can tell. She is 78 lbs. which normal for her (not losing weight). She is milking 2+ lbs. per day (being given to a rejected kid). She was out in the new grass this afternoon as she normally would be. Since her babies were born, she has called for them constantly though it has been getting less frequent. She still noses around in the kidding stall where she dropped the placenta looking for them.

Now I am concerned the calling has not been baby-related (though it sounds like that) but an indication she has been in pain. Until the bloody urine this afternoon, all urine has looked fine when I've noticed it. After birth discharge has been mostly clear (not bloody) the last few days.

Any thoughts as to what this can be?

  • I was fairly sure it was but was not trusting my judgement after all that happened.  It looked like it coming from her vulva while urinating, but . . .

I've read about your little girl and she has been in my prayers - poor little girl.   (I agree, more drainage is better than little.)

Good to hear! I would have said that the blood was from her uterus, not actually her urine. It's perfectly normal for a goat to have discharge for two weeks, and after the experience we've had the past few days, I'd say that it's better for a doe to have more drainage than not enough. I haven't been able to keep up with messages on here because we've had does kidding, and one that kidded 6 weeks ago is now at U of IL vet hospital because she has a uterus filled with fluid that is pressing on her bladder and causing her to be unable to pee. So, they've given her prostaglandin, hoping it will cause her to go into heat, which should open her cervix, so it can continue to drain.

  • All looks much better in Ginger's world.  Her goat momma over-reacted but I imagine folks understand why after all she went through.

Also, the baby calling has lessened so maybe her grieving is getting close to being behind her.  Saturday was her fourth birthday and she had a birthday "cake" at evening milking.  Under the sunflower seeds was grain and banana peel bits on top after the photo.  She, of course, loved it.

  • Thank you for sharing! I'm following your girl's story with lots of love and wishes for her well-being.

  • Vet just called! He thinks all is fine, that the "blood" is lochia (sp.) from birthing (uterine lining), left over and just now discharging. I was hoping that was the case with it being red then brownish later. He said it should be soon gone completely but to monitor her temp, that a raise in temp would the first sign of a problem.

Have I said how very much I appreciate my vet? He is working tomorrow and will likely call to check on her - he does that.
