big fluffy poops

does anyone have experience with  goat big fluffy poops?  She is not anemic, but this occurred after she kidded.  I checked the poops and there are no worms or anything.  I wondering if alfalfa  or wheat hay or sudan hay is the culprit?

  • This is quite interesting:  I put the goats in the center pen yesterday and let them sleep there over night instead of the barn.  I did copper bolus Maya again yesterday.  This morning I do not see any of the poop from her again like posted.  coincidence

  • Okay.  I went ahead and gave her another dose.  We will see what happens.  I remember last year she went though something similar and it cleared itself up, this year she had a hard delivery but gave me 4 kids...

  • The research that I linked above recommends giving COWP no more than once a month for a max of four months. I don't think their bolus lasts any longer than another one. I personally don't believe anything Santa Cruz says. They also say that you must give the bolus as a bolus and that the goat cannot chew the copper or it won't be absorbed properly. I contacted them to ask about the research they had on that recommendation, and they have none. They are simply repeating some very OLD info that is on the Saanendoah site. On that page of copper article I linked, there is a study where they compared bolus vs top-dress COWP and found no difference.

On another note regarding Santa Cruz Biotechnology, they have been investigated multiple times for animal cruelty in their labs. Just search for "santa cruz biotechnology animal cruelty" and you'll get lots of articles to read.

  • This is where I get the copper bolus

Directions for Use: Seek the advice of a veterinarian or goat husbandry specialist to ascertain copper status and the type of supplementation required for goats under consideration.

Goats over 50 lbs bodyweight and over 3 months of age: 1 (4 g) capsule. A single dose typically lasts 8 months to 1 year.

  • Thanks

  • Here is a lot of studies on COWP for your reading pleasure :-)

  • I'm thinking De for the parasites and gave her safeguard for the dewormer.   Yes, 4G of copper bolus is what I give them.

  • As I was saying, a single fecal does not rule out parasites. COWP actually works as a dewormer for stomach worms. If you give her the 4 gram dose you were talking about in another thread, that might take care of it.

  • I checked under the microscope and did not find anything abnormal.  She has been dewormed and started on DE.  I did check the eyelids and she is not anemic.   She is looking fine and acting fine, it's just the silly poop  :-)

  • Poop like that is usually associated with an increase in worm load after kidding, and it is very common. If you found zero worm eggs in the poop, then something went wrong with the fecal. No goat has zero worms. Although a fecal can confirm internal parasites it cannot rule them out because goats are not shedding worms in 100% of their poop. Check the doe's eyelids to be sure she is not anemic (pink or white rather than red) and also check body condition. If she is losing body condition and/or does not have red eyelids, she should probably be treated for parasites.
