Beginner Questions? full height?

Hi All, my two little does arrived yesterday, so all my beginner questions will start. Thank You in Advance for all the help and advice you send my way. At what age do they reach there full height? Bess is 8 months old and Belle is 6 months.

  • Yes, I found a website that says Lily of the valley and English Ivy are toxic to goats, I have a small patch of Lily of the valley and an enormous area with ivy, will have to remove them.

I would like suggestions for breeding the girls, I have no interest in keeping a billy. Is AI a possibility or is transporting the does to a billy the best way?

  • I've heard lily of the valley is poisonous to all mammals.

As for chickens, they can share space, and there is nothing "bad" in chicken feed, but goats will eat all of it and get diarrhea, so it needs to be out of their reach. There have been conversations on here in the past where people talked about how they handled goats and chickens living together.

  • Thanks for the reply, here is my second question, many more to come!!  My goats will at times share a common area with a flock of chickens, is there any poultry feeds that are dangerous for the goats to eat?  And is Lily-of-the valley toxic to them?
  • Congratulations on your new goats!

Most NDs are not at their full height until they are 3 years old. This is why there is such a controversy about height and finished champions. It is entirely possible for a goat to finish a championship before they've finished growing. They will have most of their height by a year, but will continue to fill out and perhaps gain another two or three inches in height before they're three.
