accidental breeding

A friend of mine has a doeling that is very small, 8 months old, might have been bred by her buck that jumped the fence. Does anyone have any knowledge about the correct size, age and weight of a doe to be bred? And should her vet have suggested an abortion if she wants one? The doeling only weights about 40 lbs.

  • I remember several years ago I had that happen to two of my doelings. They had their babies when they were less than a year old!  I made sure to feed them well during their pregnancy and everything, thankfully, went fine. Those two raised beautiful babies and matured later to be full sized does. I would definately make sure your on hand for the birth and have a vet on call if you decide to go through with the pregnancy. This happens alot-even in the cattle industry. If its not your bull its the neighbors that get into your young heifers! Good luck.

  • Although some people say does should be at least 35 pounds when bred, I now like them to be at least 40 pounds. They seem to do okay when bred at 35, but they don't always grow as fast you'd expect, so I've just been nervous enough times that I now like them to be 40 pounds when bred. Less then 35 pounds is definitely not a good idea. Age is probably not as important. When I first got into goats, a lot of people were just saying to breed for kidding at a year, but I'd prefer closer to 13-15 months now.

It is possible to end a pregnancy with a shot of lutalyse, if you ever feel it's necessary.
