Hello Everyone,

Herdnames, farm and goats names have a story or history behind them.  We all choose the names for our herd, our goats, pets, children, farms, homesteads and even our machinery or cars to have a name that reflects their personality or quality of character we see in them.  Often times, particularly for our herdnames or farms we pick a name that best reflects who we are, a special memory,  a heartfelt message, a farm business we own, or even a rich history that has been handed down through our families.  I also find delight in a name, that is funny, particularly from the standpoint of how it relates to those comical happenings of our life.

I thought it would be fun to read about how you came up with your Herdname, Farm, or Homestead names.  Please if you like we would also love to read about the stories behind the naming of a particular favorite goat you may have in your herd.  Feel free to add pictures, I know we all enjoy looking at and seeing pictures!

  • Love your story, Cheryl!

  • That is such a cool story, Cheryl!!

  • My herd name is Rose Morning Dove. I chose it for my Grandmother who passed away in 2009 from Alzheimers. She lived in western MN farm country and some of my ealiest memories were of the song of the Morning Dove I would hear when we went to visit her. For a long time I didn't even know what bird made that beautiful song. My Grandma's name was Rosella, and for the week after she died I had a Morning Dove sitting in the apple tree in front of my house in northern MN singing. I believe she was saying goodbye to me, since I have never heard a dove up here before or since. She always said she liked the sheep best on the farm but I suspect that she would have loved the littlest dairy goats as much as the sheep if she had been around them.

  • I'm new to this forum.  I usually hang out on the Packgoat Forum but I am casually looking for a milker that doesn't give quite as much milk as full size dairy goats.  So I am here to learn.

My farm name was originally chosen for my endurance Arabian horses and was to honor a friend who had passed from leukemia.  His favorite dog was Dawny-short for Deschutes Dawn.  So Deschutes Dawn Arabians was born.  Now I'm getting back into goats, specifically packers, the name will be Deschutes Dawn Farm.  Also our main central Oregon river is the Deschutes River.  So the name has double meaning.

I've been loving getting back into having these entertaining creatures and look forward to many years of being "owned" by them!

  • Thanks! Ill check into it. Yes I plan to. :) I'm starting to think logo and stuff now. I definitely want something with a yucca blossom! :)
  • I only have my herd registered with ADGA, but they have instructions on line. :) I love your farm name! Will you drop the farm/acres for your herd name?

  • Lucky you, Lisa, to have an area that has a name you can use already! We have so few geographical points of interest around here that everything has been used Multiple times it seems. My current favorite now for ours is Prairie Fleur Farm/Acres. It has the idea I want to portray and I love French! It has a nod even to my beloved yuccas, the prairie candle/blossom! :) We'll see I may come up with another idea yet! Lol! Anybody know how you register your herd name with the goat registeries?
  • We are moving to my husband's family farm in New Ross, Nova Scotia. The area that we are moving to is known as 'The Forties' and there is a river running through the property called Forties River. So we decided to name the farm Forties River Farm and use the herd name Forties. That way we can register all the animals we plan to get under the one herd name. It doesn't sound all that inventive but a lot of people know the area when you say, I live in the Forties. It was an area that was divided into 40 plots of land and give to British soilders as payment for their service.

I wish I was a graphic designer though because I haven't been able to come up with a farm sign idea / logo yet :(

  • I guess I've never posted mine. MilkNKids. Because I wanted milk and kids! And boy did I grow a great herd since then. What fun.

  • Ya, that's why I didn't like Sunset Acres! :} the only thing I don't like about Prairie Blossom is it reminded me of Cheryl Blossom in Archie Comics. (Insert eye roll!)

I like Arctic Song, Prairie Blossom and Dream Chaser.  Dream Chaser a lot.  Sunset Acres would be nice, but it reminds me of a retirement home. :)
