Selenium

Have had goats for many years. Worked for a vet for 20 years. My goats have been dry for the last 4 years. Been fed well and no health problems. Bought 2 Nigerians recently and the issue is that normally I give Bo-Se to the herd. My bottle has recently expired and of course it is prescription....I am not taking a healthy animal in to just be able to buy Bo-Se. $$$. They have loose trace minerals and block minerals with selenium but we are a selenium deficient area. What do you do to supplement the herd and the newborn kids with?

  • Thanks. Have a couple places to call.
  • I started using a loose selenium free choice about six years ago. I had been getting it from Caprine Supply, but they quit carrying it last year. Someone on here found something very similar from Fertrell. Check their website for your nearest dealer and ask them to order it for you. It's not on their website (least I couldn't find it), but when I asked my local dealer, he ordered it for me. It's just selenium-E, and it's mixed with wheat middlings, I think. Looks like sawdust. The goats don't eat much of it unless they run out of their mineral mix. I used to do BoSe, and when switching to this, I didn't have any issues with reduced fertility or retained placentas or anything else related to fertility, so I'm convinced it works well.
