Kyle Mead from Kansas City, MO.

My wife and I have started taking some small steps towards a simpler, healthier lifestyle. So far, we have started a small flock of backyard chickens and we grew a garden this year. We have started doing some canning and have a number of plans for the upcoming year.

We recently closed on a small house in the country with a little land, enough to start a small herd of goats. We have settled on Nigerian Dwarfs because we want the milk and have limited amounts of land available for pasturing. We have a lot of work to do before we make a purchase of 2-3 does.

I learned of this site having attended the Mother Earth News Fair in Lawrence, KS.and attending a couple of classes with Deborah Niemann. I ended up purchasing her book, "Raising Goats Naturally," because I believe her approach matches my own thoughts about how we should raise and treat our livestock. I expect this site to be a helpful tool in my education process as I eneter the world of goats..

  • Thank you all for the warm welcome. I find community forums to be so helpful. My wife calls me a "Google" farmer having started my small flock of chickens just this past spring and using forums, blogs, and the internet as a primary means to learn and make decisions on everything from housing, food, and healthcare. We are really lucky to be able to draw upon the knowledge of others so readily today.
