Homeopathy in goats

I use homeopathy as my first go-to health care system.  For me, my dogs, my goats, my chickens, cats ...

I've moaned and groaned recently about one of my goats being a little dry, a little dandruff and also a tad greasy. I was concerned since she was pregnant and I was worried about why she was like this.

I learned about zinc deficiency, selenium, copper, how shedding often is accompanied by some dandruff, all about different nutritional values in sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, alfalfa, different minerals and all this fiddling and focus - nothing changed in her coat no matter what I did.

Friday and Saturday of this week - my veterinary homeopath came to visit from Florida (I live in Massachusetts). He likes to see his patients from time to time although most of the time - we do phone consults. So this time - he came to see all his clients in my area and he checked out my dogs, and my goats. He studied my lovely goat with the slightly dry yet oily coat and suggested a remedy.

It was a constitutional remedy - taking all of her into account. (As compared to an acute remedy which deals with just one physical issue - ie. arnica for trauma inury).  He looked at her temperament, her physical stuff, her body type and history. And the symptom picture - ie. this all started when the weather sort of started to begin to change with late winter/early early spring conditions.  He picked Thuja for this particular goat. I gave it last night.

This morning - went to the goats. I was happily shocked but not entirely surprised to see my dull, somewhat dry yet oily coat with some dandruff goat absolutely glowing, shiny, hydrated coatwise with no sign of dandruff any longer - just looking like her normal incredible self.  Just another reminder how much I like homeopathy.

I know from my dog diet days that often it isn't the diet (although of course nutrition is so important). Each animal is different in how they assimilate their diet and in the way it deals with the environmental conditions at that time. I had forgotten this a little and focused on what I was doing wrong with the diet. The diet was fine, but she was not. Now she has been re-balanced and hopefully we continue on!  My beautiful goat is back.

  • It is great that you know someone who is experienced with homeopathy in goats. The challenge with homeopathy really is finding someone knowledgeable.

For anyone reading this who is not familiar with homeopathy, the remedy will vary from one animal to another or from one person to another when using it in people. Although this remedy worked for this goat, there are many things to take into account, such as those Judy listed, so it is not as simple as taking an aspirin for a headache. There are at least a dozen different remedies that someone could use for a headache, and the right remedy would depend on several different factors.
  • Wow that's fabulous! Wish I had someone like that here... wait, I do!! If I have problems I'll call him. Thanks for the post.
