Hello from Newcastle, On

Hi everyone :) Marcy recommended this site to me.

I'm Terri, a ND newbie. I am married to Ian, we have three kids(human) - Rhyce(16), Lynnea(14), and Taylor(almost 13). We have 3 furry kids(canines), Shela, Reba, and Zeuss - which are 'rescues'. We live on 2.75acres. My husband is a General Contractor and I am a stay-at-home mom and a small business owner - I sell koi fish and pond supplies.

Ian has been nagging me for a few years to have goats,... I finally relented 2 weeks ago, but only if he got his butt in gear and constructed a goat pen... which he enthusiastically did in a couple of days, and to give me some time to research which goat breed would suit us best.

As of the beginning of this week we now are the proud owner of 4 Nigerian Dwarfs. One 6 month old girl, one 10.5 week old girl, and two 6 month old boys (one is the 1/2 brother to the 6mo girl). Needless to say Ian and I are taking a 'crash course' on how to care for them. I have several questions swimming around in my head so will most likely be posting in the other forums.

Kind Regards,
Terri

  • Showing is a lot of work! My daughters were really into, and it is fun. Unfortunately, it usually involved getting up at 4 a.m. and/or sleeping in barns. Maybe someday I'll do it again. But for now, I'm just enjoying their amazing milk. They are also a lot of fun! There is nothing wrong with just enjoying their antics!

Thank you for the welcome Deborah :)

Well, to be honest, really the idea was to have pets... but after reading 'a lot' I think eventually milking will be the focus. We only have one registered ND, that is the young buck from Marcy.

My father bred african basenji's through my childhood, he was into showing his dogs. It was loads of fun to go to the shows, especially when one of our dogs won ribbons. There is a possibility in the future that I would be tempted to show,... and when that time comes I (and my husband) hope to have enough experience to do so and invest in registered does and a few more bucks.

  • Welcome to the group! Are you planning to milk or show?
